We officially usher in summer in the northern hemisphere on June 21, as the Sun moves into Cancer marking the first day of summer. In the lands south of the equator, this marks the Winter solstice. Traditionally, this marked one of the most magical days of the year. This was a time for celebrations at night where potent charms were cast and a great time for making wishes that one wanted to come true.
The Sun moving into Cancer marks one of the four Cardinal Ingresses in the year - the others being Aries, Libra and Capricorn. These are important marking points in the progress of the annual solar cycle, being times of renewal.
Cancer is a highly creative, ambitious but most of all a hyper-sensitive emotional sign. It rules the feminine and the family. It puts a high value on security, loyalty, patriotism, friends as well as those related by blood-line.
However, not all will run quite to Cancer's liking as we step into summer. The first aspect the Cancer Sun will make on June 22 is a square (90 degrees) to Uranus. Uranus is almost the opposite of Cancer in its inclinations. It dislikes ties, hates possessiveness, is brutally honest in its comments and can be thoroughly contrary. It will tend to upset the applecart and bring surprises. On the upside it can shake up situations which have become too stuck-in-the-mud though even that may upset Cancer's comfort zone. What, however, may help is the Sun square Jupiter on June 23, which will inject a note of optimism and enthusiasm. It may not be realistic but everyone will feel the better of it.
